First off The York is a great location. It's convenient for students and those who don't mind a short walk to the metro. The building itself is in shabby condition. The bathrooms and kitchens are really old but given the demand for apartments in Foggy Bottom nothing in the building really has to be maintained because there's always a flow of new tenants. Because of this constant flow there are about 27 coats of paint on the walls and doors. The doors and floors are paper thin so it is very easy to hear people in the hall and above you. They do not enforce the DC law stating that each room must have 80% of the hardwood floors covered. I can trace where my neighbors are at all times because of their footsteps and how often they drop things. I also often wake up to my neighbor's alarm clocks because the walls are so thin. If you lock yourself out on the week day between 9 to 5 (convenient time for students and not people with full time jobs) they will gladly give you the spare key for free until you locate yours. If you lock yourself out after 5 or on weekends they charge you $50 to simply unlock your door. The payment must be in cash indicating that whoever unlocks your door is clearly pocketing the money. They do the same thing for changing the locks, cash only. Laundry can be done downstairs however you must use their handy laundry card. The laundry machine only accepts $5 and $10 bills so you're out of luck if you really need to do laundry and don't have any large bills. The roof deck doesn't have very normal hours but don't waste your time going up there. There are boards sticking out of the floor and the loungechairs are chained to the tacky metal fence surrounding the area. There have been several fires as well. For some reason all of the older residents always blame them on the students, as if someone over the age of 45 is unable to start a fire. As stated below management is fairly lazy except for fixing emergencies. I'd recommend living here if you have the hours of a student, going to sleep late and waking up late. Otherwise you will have a difficult time falling asleep with all of the noise. |
