Apartment Review for Furman House - Washington, DC

Mr. Furman has 4 nice apartments (3 for rent) at 1305 Rhode Island Ave NW. We lived there for ~18 months. He was hospitable and respectful while our 12 month lease was in effect; however when the lease turned month-to-month, he became unresponsive to requests to perform maintenance, attempted maintenance himself unsuccessfully, and even accused us of breaking the appliances.. Towards the end he became very rude when answering simple questions. His final response to our requests was a large rent hike on our unit without any reason, while leaving other units' rent alone. Because of this we were forced to leave.

Other warnings: he will require you to deposit a rent check in his personal account (never seen this demand before!) and beware his late payment clauses - no matter what he says at the beginning, he will pursue them even if you are 1 day late and the banks are closed!! Also, the two small AC units in the apt were wholly inadequate to cool the whole place, but he didn't seem to care about this.
