I've lived in the Majestic a long time and have for the most part enjoyed my time here, but there are serious problems. Pros: Cost: It is inexpensive and the apartments are large by any standard with fantastic closets, hardwood floors and thick walls... noise control (in regard to your neighbors) has never been a problem. Noise from the neighborhood is another matter as 16th St. is extremely busy and on the weekends, Mt. Pleasant becomes drunk person/car alarm central. People: most people are great. The ethnic make-up and socio-economic make-up of the building is extremely diverse. The building management throws great holiday parties (Holiday season, Halloween and 4th of July) for adults and kids alike. To be honest, the unfriendly people tend to be the upwardly mobile hill-staffer types that have started to move into the building. OKs: Immediate management-I've never had any problems with the management and they have always been responsive to my repair requests. However, I have heard that they can be unresponsive at times. The building engineers are great though. Cons: Pests (Roaches and Mice)-Mt. Pleasant, in general, has a pest problem, but I have seen the roach/mice problem worsen in the Majestic. A few months ago, in the early morning, I consistently saw mice in the lobby everyday for a week. They've "fixed" the problem by sealing up the heaters in the lobby, but I've heard stories from other residents about furry visitors in their apartments. Roaches: I've tried everything (foggers, boric acid, sonic things), but they are always around. Sometimes you won't see any for weeks, but inevitably they always come back. We keep a very neat apartment, so it's doubly frustrating. Safety: there is key card access and they have been better about having a security giuard that comes through every few hours as well as a DC policeman on weekends, but occasionally a vagrant gets in and you'll find an intoxicated/high person passed outi in the back entrance vestibule. This happened to me once and I called the Cafritz (the management company) emergency line. No one answered (nice right?) so I left a message and asked for someone to call me back, but they never did. Overall, I'd say, if you need an inexpensive place to live it's a good place to start, but if you can move on. The only reason I've stayed so long is because I'm poor.
