I lived in the Empire for 2 years and was very happy with my time there. It was my first apartment and will most certainly hold a special place in my heart. Location: Excellent location in Foggy Bottom; on George Washington University campus, diagonally across from IMF/World Bank. Very close to a (small) Safeway grocery store, 24-hour 7/11, liquor stores, dry-cleaners, restaurants and bars. Four blocks from the White House, six from the Kennedy center, seven from the Washington Memorial and Lincoln Monuments. Served by two Blue/Orange metro stops (six blocks away) and a Red line stop (seven blocks away). Served by a very large number of buses, notably the 30-series running down Pennsylvania and up Wisconsin. The location is pretty ridiculously great. Amenities: I lived in the x08 (108, 208, 308 etc) tier of apartments so can only speak to those. I took the apartment due to the "bedroom"; about a quarter of the apartment is split with floor-to-ceiling glass panes, including an opening that looks like it at one time had french doors. The area fit my full-size bed very comfortably with much room to spare, and would snugly fit a queen-size. It's like a junior one-bedroom and I loved it. A window almost the length of the area faces out onto F Street. The closet is huge; could fit a twin-size bed easily and has lots of shelving and a rod for hanging clothes. Bathroom is typical DC (small) size, has a window which is very nice. The kitchen is very small - as in not enough floor space for a trash can unless you want to block the oven, refrigerator, or cabinet in the middle from opening. The refrigerator is unfortunately a half-size under-counter model with a freezer space inside and the 4-range stove and oven are electric; cooks may want to look elsewhere. I can't cook and thus used the fridge for drinks and snacks :) Three large cabinets and two small quarter-circle corner shelves finish off the kitchen. The living room, rather curiously, has a wall out of which a table and two benches fold (like the old beds that fold out of the wall). It ended up being a novelty more than anything, but it was great as an appetizer/drink area during parties! Great parquet floors all over. A word on noise; the previous review's comment on paper-thin walls is not at all accurate. As this was my first apartment, I "tested" how far I could go by turning up music loudly and then going to visit my neighbors' apartments to see if I could hear the music through the wall. I couldn't. However, the DOORS on the apartment ARE paper thin, and DO have an inch gap underneath them. If you're in the hall, the building sounds loud, but the apartments are extremely well guarded against sound. A word on receiving packages: It's tough. The 9-5 front desk does not sign for packages, there is no package room, and most delivery services do not leave packages in front of your door, meaning you either need to go pick it up yourself or reschedule delivery. I solved this (rather frustrating) problem by shipping my packages to my office, but this might not be possible for everyone. Staff: Mrs. Kennedy from the leasing office, and the woman at the front desk is very helpful and puts out coffee and hot chocolate every morning, and maintenance was always very friendly and quick to respond to any of my problems. Why did I move? My apartment faced F Street, and the site of a new dorm being built by GW. I was concerned about construction noise, having dealt with it when I was a student in the dorms. Additionally, I was ready to move out of Foggy Bottom after having been there for so long; I now live in Glover Park. Oh, a PS - the building has a wonderful roof-desk with lounge chairs.
